City of Danville

Located in the heart of the San Ramon Valley and stretching from the foothills of scenic Mount Diablo across the valley to the Las Trampas Ridge, Danville is an affluent town with a distinct country feeling. Blackhawk, Diablo and Danville form the region known as The Danville Area, Danville is Located approximately 30 miles east of the San Francisco Bay and 47 miles north of San Jose. In addition to the scenic beauty of Mount Diablo and its vast foothills, Danville's moderate, warm weather, quality housing, excellent schools, and country-like rural setting make it a very attractive residential location. Danville has a good mix of custom homes and new home developments, many of which have swimming pools and recreation centers.

Because of Danville's steady 3.1% growth rate, the area has an increasingly diverse employment base in businesses such as transportation, communication, finance and retail. Danville provides a large amount of quality commercial and retail space for businesses wishing to capitalize on the area's high median income. Danville's location on I-680 also gives its residents convenient access to Walnut Creek, Oakland, and San Francisco to the north, and San Jose and Silicon Valley to the south.

Famous for its warm and clear sunny days throughout most of the year, Danville provides endless opportunities to enjoy outdoor recreation activities such as jogging, hiking, biking, and golfing. Many parks and open spaces such as the popular Iron Horse Trail, nearby Mount Diablo State Park and Las Trampas Regional Wilderness Area facilitate many opportunities for natural retreats.

Danville is the center of shopping and dining opportunities. Many quality shopping centers such as the Clocktower, Crossroads of Danville, Danville Livery & Mercantile, Old Town Danville, and others all provide a wide selection of specialty shopping and dining experiences ranging from casual cafes to gourmet establishments. In addition, there are many well-respected museums and performing arts and theatre groups. The annual Devil Mountain Run on Mount Diablo attracts thousands, as well as Hot August Nights in the downtown area.

HISTORY: Danville was the site of one of the early farming communities of Contra Costa County. Although the first growth was in communities closer to the water (e.g., Martinez), as farming and ranching flourished in the 19th century, Danville evolved. It is located in the middle of the narrow San Ramon Valley.

The opening of the Caldecott Tunnel and a postwar exodus from the urban areas fired tremendous growth in central contra the 1950's, which became a geographical extension of the affluent Oakland/Berkeley Hills area. The orchards and farmland of Danville offered a perfect setting for affordable housing.

During the 1970's Danville exploded with residential development. As other communities ran out of buildable land, Danville offered an extension of the affluent areas which adjoined it. While lower cost housing was developed in Concord, Martinez, and the Delta communities, Danville became the upscale alternative.

With the growth of the South Bay as a hi-tech haven many commuters are heading south. Danville, which positioned south of Lamorinda, offers a shorter commute and generally newer homes.
